Ladies climb back up the league following a gutsy performance by the whole team

Romsey (IV) 1 - 3 Swanage & Wareham Ladies (II)

Swans travelled to Romsey on Saturday who were sitting only one place below them in the league. This match proved to be one of the hardest fought this season, producing a well deserved victory.

Right from the start the home side showed their intent. The pressure was relentless on the visitor's back line who held strong. Finally there was a bit of relief, when a great ball from the midfield found Pam Laidman in space. She strolled into the D and calmly gave Swans the lead. Soon after this however, a goalmouth scramble produced an equaliser just before half time.

The second half continued to produce entertaining hockey, especially for the travelling spectators. After 15 minutes, Nicky Brooke (or Abbie Ribeiro-Ferreira - the scorer was unclear, even for those concerned!!) tapped the ball over the line to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Things were tense towards the end of the game with Swans defenders throwing everything at keeping the ball out. Bev Parker, Jackie Barker, Niamh McKeown and keeper Nikki Grenville-Cleave especially played a starring role. This sheer determination was rewarded in the last minute of the game when Olive Castillo-Macpherson went on a blistering run through the centre, slipping the ball to Laidman who once again beat the keeper, giving Swans a great 3-1 win.

After the match, Captain Yaz Unsworth said "This was a fantastic team effort. Normally we vote for one player of the match but today we unanimously voted for the whole team".
