2026 starts with a brilliant away win at Romsey

Romsey (I) 0 - 2 Swanage & Wareham (I)

The ladies 1s were back on the pitch for the first match of 2026 after a postponement last week. But there were no signs of the Christmas break in their performance.

Romsey have been vying for promotion and currently sitting in the top 4. The game got off to a steady start with the two teams playing end to end hockey. Romsey were looking formidable and well rehearsed on their very bouncy home pitch.
The first half was defensive for Swans but the defence was tight and kept a clean sheet going into the half time break.

The second half brought a new intensity with Romsey’s desire for the win evident. Swans were unrattled and despite 7 consecutive short corners, the defence were impenetrable. Player of the match Eden Crook was a force to be reckoned with, swiping the ball away from the goal line to prevent Romsey going 1-0 up.

As the game progressed, the intensity started to build. Charlotte Grenville-Cleave (GC) capitalised on a pass from the midfield and broke away into Romsey’s D. Drawing the defence and goalkeeper to the left she unleashed a reverse strike that found the back right corner, taking Swans to 1-0 with only 10 minutes to go.

Romsey battled on again trying to equalise but goalkeeper Leah Rutter made some exceptional saves, clearing numerous shots on goal. With only 5 mins to go, Robyn Murray drove up the line, sending the ball across to Charlotte GC who again attacked the D and got a shot away to the corner giving the girls a 2-0 lead.

The Swans kept control of the game to the last minute and came out with a 2-0 win putting them 4th in the league table.
